Maritime
Training solutions designed to deliver and monitor security training on board and at sea.
The Maritime industry is under increased pressure to provide strict security measures that protect, but not hinder, travelling passengers. Delivering high-level security training in this sector has unique challenges - with trainees in multiple locations around the globe and limited connectivity once security personnel are at sea.
Our innovative training solutions allow security managers to deliver and monitor training requirements on board, regardless of ship/trainee location. Additionally, the flexible nature of our training ensures complete visibility at land-based headquarters, ensuring full reporting capability on the state of an entire fleet at any time.
Case Study
As the cruise liner industry has grown, so has the potential threat of terrorist attack.
Background
As the cruise liner industry has grown, so has the potential threat of terrorist attack. In light of this, 10 years ago, The International Maritime Organisation imposed aviation industry-style security protocols on the maritime industry. Stricter controls meant cruise liner operators needed to overhaul their security procedures to avoid the severe repercussions for not having adequate protocols in place. A port can refuse a ship entry if its security organisation is deemed to be not adequate.
During a cruise, a ship will dock at numerous ports and the passengers disembark for day trips. The onboard security team ensures that every returning passenger — and their belongings — are screened before coming on board. Each cruise ship requires their own security screening point and, as a result, security staff need to be trained to identify threat items with minimal disruption to the passengers. At the time, the solutions offered were only possible if the ship was in port, as access to hefty servers was necessary to facilitate training. Taking staff off the ship for training was difficult to schedule, due to the continuous travel schedule.
Need
The need for onboard training was obvious, but the challenge lay in implementing a system that could run aboard the ship and didn’t need to connect to a land-based server. Using the ship’s satellite system was not an option due to the expense and lack of bandwidth.
Solution
Quadratica designed a system which could run on board and had no need to connect to a land-based server. Laptops are configured with the same lessons uploaded to each laptop. Courses, lessons and modules are managed by the cruise company head office, and training takes place on board, delivered by local admins. New personnel are added by the local admin while new lessons are deployed by the head. Training design and reporting is accessed through the Cloud, so the entire fleet can be trained, with lessons being sent directly from head office, while training records are returned to the office at the same time. In an emergency, support technicians can act remotely to rectify any issues being experienced at sea. Version updates and updates to the image library are also applied by remote access.
Results and Benefits
Using computer-based training on board the cruise liners is an inexpensive and timesaving solution to a complex requirement.
Training can take place on board, which mitigates the challenge of scheduling training while maintaining continuous travel. None of the high costs associated with systems that use satellite communications are a factor.
A centralised administrator (head office) controls the training, with regular access to training reports. Comprehensive curriculums can be created for the fleet and staff training reports are easily generated for provision to ports and other authorities.
Courses
X-Screen®
X-Ray Image Recognition Training
Designed and developed for X-Ray screeners of all levels - X-Screen® is an X-Ray Image Recognition and Interpretation Training course certified by the DfT to comply with EU regulations. The programme allows for the modification of lesson styles to match the experience level of the trainee.
X-Screen® offers high quality, X-Ray correct simulation on all major x-ray machines. Our innovative Bag-Builder module allows new threat objects to be added into the substantial image library quickly and efficiently. As regulations change, X-Screen® can be reconfigured to replicate new operational environments, ensuring employees receive training that is relevant to their duties, regardless of industry sector.
Available in traditional classroom format or as an online course.
XPSA
X-Ray Pre-Selection Assessment
Without proper training, the most expensive technology is of little value.
Our Pre-Selection assessment course helps employers determine the aptitude and suitability of prospective X-Ray machine operators and screeners. It tests employees’ ability to identify those who present a threat; testing for colour-blindness, image recognition skills and general threat image identification proficiency.
GSAT
General Security Awareness Training
The UK’s Department of Transport and EU regulation dictate staff who require a compulsory airside pass complete a General Security Awareness Training course before applying for their security clearance.
Our GSAT course covers a wide range of airport employees - from shop workers and cleaners to contractors, it has been designed and developed by accredited DfT trainers, in accordance with the strict UK DfT requirements, on the scope and content of GSAT.
Once the Security Awareness training has been completed, employees will have a clear understanding of airport security measures, their obligations, and what they are expected to do in the event of an incident.
CST
Checkpoint Security Training
Our Checkpoint Security Training course ensures that employees understand their role and responsibilities in relation to the safety of the Security Restricted Area (SRA), while on duty at an airport security checkpoint.
Designed for any member of staff employed to control access points, this course trains personnel to prepare people for security checks. It also covers searching bags and persons by hand, and the use of X-Ray machines or metal detectors.
STP
Standard Test Piece
Our Standard Test Piece is a comprehensive training and information course, designed to help the user ensure the operational reliability and performance of X-Ray machines, using STP devices from all manufacturers. STPs are designed to ensure the correct functioning of X-Ray machines, allowing the operator to rectify any issues before creating an adverse affect on security.
It is a legal obligation within the EU to regularly test security X-Ray screening equipment for image quality. A standard for X-Ray penetration and image resolution, the Standard Test Piece (STP) was set by the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) and the European Civil Aviation Conference to replace the Combined Test Piece (CTP).
TBT
Telephone Bomb Threat Awareness Training
Our Telephone Bomb Threat Awareness course is a training aid for any person who may receive a bomb threat via telephone, in the workplace. This comprehensive CD based training is designed to help organisations combat the potential disruption, and disturbance caused by telephone threats, training employees to handle the threat both during the call, and immediately afterwards.
MTA
Mailroom Threat Awareness
Our Mailroom Threat Awareness course covers essential information for employees likely to encounter a suspicious package in a company’s mailroom.
Subjects include recent incidents in mailroom, threat devices, types of devices and consequences of misidentification, basic mail sorting, and general health and safety procedures in the mailroom.
FSA
Fire Safety Awareness
Our Fire Safety Awareness course is delivered online in manageable modules, and completed in conjunction with your own evacuation instructions. This essential course covers the most important fire safety subjects necessary to keep people alive and uninjured in an emergency situation. Subjects include the correct use of fire extinguishers, how to attack different types of fires, interpretation of fire safety signs and fire assembly points.
Developed jointly by Quadratica UK and respected industry experts active in the Fire and Safety industry, our FSA course is compliant with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
PPT
Personal Profiling Training
Profiling is a screening technique that determines the security risk posed by an individual through the analysis of travel documents, behaviour and appearance. A degree of non-discriminatory profiling is essential – it allows security resources to be focused on those who present a higher level of risk to security.
Profiling can be a difficult task without proper training. Our PPT course educates security personnel, helping them identify those who present a threat and recognise abnormal behaviour.
